    Comprehensive Analysis

    1) "Mass" -- As to mass airflow sensor

    1mass
    Pronunciation: 'mas
    Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Old English mæsse, modification of Vulgar Latin *messa, literally, dismissal at the end of a religious service, from Late Latin missa, from Latin, feminine of missus, past participle of mittere to send
1 capitalized : the liturgy of the Eucharist especially in accordance with the traditional Latin rite
2 often capitalized : a celebration of the Eucharist <Sunday masses held at three different hours>
3 : a musical setting for the ordinary of the Mass

Unsolved problems in physics: What causes anything to have mass?
The U.S. National Prototype Kilogram, which currently serves as the primary standard for measuring mass in the U.S.

Mass is the property of a physical object that quantifies the amount of matter and energy it is equivalent to. Mass is a central concept of classical mechanics and related subjects, and there are several forms of mass within the framework of relativistic kinematics (see mass in special relativity and mass in General Relativity). In the theory of relativity, the quantity invariant mass, which in concept is close to the classical idea of mass, does not vary between single observers in different reference frames.

In classical mechanics, there are three types of mass or properties called mass:

    • Inertial mass is a measure of an object's resistance to changing its state of motion when a force is applied. An object with small inertial mass changes its motion more readily, and an object with large inertial mass does so less readily.
    • Passive gravitational mass is a measure of the strength of an object's interaction with the gravitational field. Within the same gravitational field, an object with a smaller passive gravitational mass experiences a smaller force than an object with a larger passive gravitational mass. (This force is called the weight of the object. In informal usage, the word "weight" is often used synonymously(confused with) with "mass", because the strength of the gravitational field is roughly constant everywhere on the surface of the Earth. In physics, the two terms are distinct: an object will have a larger weight if it is placed in a stronger gravitational field, but its passive gravitational mass remains unchanged.)
    • Active gravitational mass is a measure of the strength of the gravitational field due to a particular object. For example, the gravitational field that one experiences on the Moon is weaker than that of the Earth because the Moon has less active gravitational mass.

    2) "Airflow" -- As to mass airflow sensor

    air·flow
    Pronunciation: -"flO
    Function: noun
: a flow of air; especially : the motion of air (as around parts of an airplane in flight) relative to the surface of a body immersed in it

    3) "Sensor" -- As to mass airflow sensor

    sen·sor
    Pronunciation: 'sen-"sor, 'sen(t)-s&r
    Function: noun
Etymology: Latin sentire to perceive + English 1-or -- more at SENSE
1 : a device that responds to a physical stimulus (as heat, light, sound, pressure, magnetism, or a particular motion) and transmits a resulting impulse (as for measurement or operating a control)
    2 : SENSE ORGAN
    Pronunciation Symbols

A sensor is a type of transducer. Direct-indicating sensors, for example, a mercury thermometer, are human-readable. Other sensors must be paired with an indicator or display, for instance a thermocouple. Most sensors are electrical or electronic, although other types exist.

Sensors are used in everyday life. Applications include automobiles, machines, aerospace, medicine, industry and robotics.

Technological progress allows more and more sensors to be manufactured on the microscopic scale as microsensors using MEMS technology. In most cases a microsensor reaches a significantly higher speed and sensitivity compared with macroscopic approaches. See also MEMS sensor generations.

Since a significant change involves an exchange of energy, sensors can be classified according to the type of energy transfer that they detect.
